This painting is not trying to say anything. It is vaguely reminiscent of some sort of landscape scene. The palette of colours are members of my palette team so to speak. The texture comes from first applying thick dark versions in tone before applying the same colours in pastel version on top allowing for the dark tones to show through in some places. It is a technique I have developed in recent years and have used it to create landscape, still life and figure paintings. It works best when I am not trying to reproduce anything in particular as in no parameters to what the outcome might be. Sometimes it works better than other times. The recent planetary paintings are not achieved with this technique which is troublesome but it is because I have a distinct idea of what they should look like as I have knowledge of the NASA photo’s etc. This is a problem for me generally because I find portraiture for example very relaxing in trying to make an image look like a person - it is a meditative immersive experience. However, making a painting like this is an entirely different experience, and is exciting and exhilarating when it works.
